Universal Periodic Review
WHAT IS THE UPR?
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a UN Human Rights Council mechanism to examine the human rights record of all 193 member states. It serves as a platform for countries to make recommendations to one another across a wide range of issues, including health, gender, and equality.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
The UPR is the only human rights process that reviews every country. Its universal scope and regular cycle provide a consistent framework for tracking progress, encouraging accountability among member states and supporting sustained attention to key health issues over time.
The following country profiles provide an accessible overview of the Right to Health situation in each country by compiling health-related recommendations from previous UPR cycles, key health indicators, and verbatim extracts from National Reports, Stakeholders' Summaries, and UN Compilation reports into a centralized resource. These country profiles are designed to assist diplomats and policymakers across the health, foreign affairs, and related sectors, as well as civil society actors, to advance the Right to Health within UPR working group deliberations.
